Cowboy Bebop Production Restart Nears As Actors Enter Quarantine

Cowboy Bebop is entering production soon.

Every production has its troubles, but Cowboy Bebop has seemingly been a bit more unlucky than most. Early on in its production, they had to shut things down due to an on-set injury from star John Cho. And before things could start up again, the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, likely delaying its production even further. Now, it looks like Netflix is ready to move forward with the live-action adaptation of the anime.

The evidence comes from actor Alexander Hassell. Hassell will be playing the villainous Vicious in the Netflix show, and he took to Twitter to share his best quarantine face. According to his post yesterday, he entered evening zero of the two-week quarantine in New Zealand. Check out the post down below!

While Hassell doesn’t explicitly mention Cowboy Bebop in his post, it’s just a matter of putting two and two together. As was previously reported in July, Cowboy Bebop was one of the productions to receive border exemptions in New Zealand. Production was expected to begin very soon, so it looks like late August is around when we can expect them to return.

Based on what we’re hearing, the crew for the film likely arrived ahead of time, quarantined, then started work readying the set for actual production. Once the actors have hit their two-week quarantine requirement, they can officially start. I can only imagine the producers are crossing their fingers that no one has any symptoms within that time period. But between the quarantine and frequent testing, I think productions should largely be safe.
