Black Widow moves back yet again — along with a couple other Marvel Studios movies.

It’s happening, guys. Originally slated for May of 2020, Black Widow was already pushed to November thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it has faced yet another delay — and it’s fairly substantial. Marvel Studios has officially announced that it will hit theaters on May 7, 2021. This means it’s moved over a year from its original release date, which is pretty darn impressive for a studio that averages three films a year. 

Consequently, the rest of the Marvel Studios slate has also been pushed. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been pushed from May 7, 2021 to July 9 of the same year. Eternals hits on November 5, which is a significant push from its February 12 release date. Quite interestingly, this means that Eternals will actually hit after Shang-Chi. This indicates that Marvel Studios isn’t above shuffling the actual order of (at least some of) their releases.

So…what does this mean for their Disney+ shows? Well, there was already one big hint of a release shuffle. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally supposed to hit in August, but is now set for a nebulous blanket 2021 release. This means WandaVision is hitting first instead of after.

I can’t help but wonder what this means for Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. All signs, based on their initial release and the current status, makes me think one is dependent on the other. For all we know, the studio may not want audiences to see The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before Black Widow. Of course, I don’t have any real support outside of the release shuffle, but it seems very possible. 

But who knows? At this point, anything’s possible, and we won’t really know until we see how the pandemic continues to run its course. At the very least, this all seems to indicate that Mulan wasn’t a huge success for the House of Mouse, which is a shame. I know a lot of fans other than me who would have appreciated a Marvel Studios film hitting Disney+ at a premium level.
