TCA 2022 | EPIX’s From EPs Focuses on People as the Nightmares in the Horror Series

EPIX stepped up its original horror scripted content with Chapelwaite based on Stephen King’s short story. Now the premium television network turned to another sci-fi/horror series From.

The press at the Television Critics Association this week, which LRM Online attended, saw the first-look footage of the dark horror series. It even gave us a glimpse of the “Nightmare Creatures” named by the executive producers of the series.

These Nightmare Creatures look like pale humans that only come out during the night. Any confrontations with these beings may have a bloody result.

However, it may be the townsfolk may be the nightmarish creatures from within as the series is more focused on the inhabitants trapped inside the bubble.

“We were looking for an opportunity to tell a story about people,” described executive producer and showrunner Jeff Pinker. “And everything else is really just designed to be either pressure points or a goal; either the thing you’re afraid of or the thing you’re hoping for. And the story takes place between those two poles.

Executive producer John Griffin added, “The show really began with the idea of what it would be like if the reality that you knew was taken away and your day-to-day reality literally became a nightmare. What kind of person would you be? What kind of person would you become? And that idea was really at the heart of where the show first began and everything kind of grew from that.”

Executive producer Jack Bender acknowledged that producing Mr. Mercedes years ago allowed to bring that Stephen King influence and storytelling into a series with From.

“Working with the maestro like Stephen King, I learned all the time. And he’s the master of what makes you want to hide under the bed,” stated Bender. “But in the world of Stephen King, it’s always about—what fascinates me is the monster inside the characters, not just the monster outside the characters. That is very much was the focus of our show.”

Obviously, there will be plenty of twists in turns, particularly with two alumni producers of Lost with Jack and Jeff. They insist the series will be different and more focused than that series.

“I think that having done Lost and then taking the lesson of Lost, the storytelling lessons and sort of ran them through a filter fringe and tried to apply them here. We’re approaching every season like its own chapter with its own questions and its own answers,” said Pinkner. “Unlike Lost, which was 22 episodes a season if not more, this is 10 episodes—a very contained arc. We like the limitations of 10 episodes forcing us to make harder choices. We have been very cognizant of making sure that the characters are asking the questions that we know what the audiences are asking. It focuses back on what the characters are going through—using it to explore humanity.”

From premieres on EPIX on February 20.
