Where to start with all this? Rumors that the Damon Lindelof script was not great, that Kathleen Kennedy is under pressure to deliver and that three Star Wars movies will be announced this year. That’s the latest Barside Buzz from insider Jeff Sneider, who has been ahead of the game when it comes to this next Star Wars movie. Sneider was first to report that Lindelof was writing a Star Wars movie. Additionally Sneider was also first to say Lindelof had left and this was backed up quickly by trades who say Steven Knight is now on scripting duties.

Now Sneider offers a little more information in the latest edition of The Hot Mic Podcast. Sneider says that there were disagreements between director Shareem Obaid-Chinoy and script writers Lindelof and Britt-Gibson. His sources also informed him that there were issues with the current script and that Steven Knight was waiting in the wings to take over. Sneider also says that Obaid-Chinoy was personally chosen by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. Therefore, it seems that’s why these disagreements led to Lindelof and Britt-Gibson exit, and Obaid-Chinoy staying on board as director.

The insider then went on to say he’s heard that Kennedy’s job depends on her getting a Star Wars movie in theatres by December 2025. He’s also heard that three Star Wars movies will be announced in a few weeks at Star Wars Celebration. Clearly one of these will by Obaid-Chinoy’s movie. We’d also expect one of the to be that of Taika Waititi. However, the third movie I have no idea given that Feige’s movie was supposedly shelved?

I’m not exactly a fan of such tight timescales being part of the development on a Star Wars movie again. This is what caused so many issues with the ill-advised sequel trilogy. However If you are Disney, you probably think Lucasfilm has had years to sort this out before now. Business is business, but if the next Star Wars film isn’t very good, then the money won’t follow.
