One fan debate that has raged for years is, trunks or no trunks on Superman? Well when it comes to Superman: Legacy, director James Gunn says they are still yet undecided Superman’s design. Gunn was, I’m sure, more referring to the overall design of his Superman not being locked in, but the trunks question was what he was asked by one fan. Check it out.

I’m kinda with Gunn in terms of the fact I think this is a wait and see scenario. I’m pretty sure when it gets to the in person auditions which are now being set up, or taking place, Gunn will have a version of a Superman suit to see his potential candidates in. However, it would be far wiser to hire the actor first before finalizing that design, which is what I think will happen here. Additionally, as Gunn says, there is more to Superman than the costume, but a good costume does help.

I’m actually surprised by how much mileage the trunks questions tends to get among fans. Even within our own comments I’ve seen fans furiously disagree on the trunks issue. I’m ambivalent about it personally. If I like the design, I’ll say so, and vice versa. To that end there have been suits both with and without trunks over the years I have liked, and disliked. Ultimately a design either works for you, or it does not. For example, I really liked the Henry Cavill suit design, but dislike the one used within Superman and Lois at the CW.
For me there is always a risk a Superman suit looks really camp and silly. Therefore, you have to get it right first time, especially for a movie. It should look like a movie suit and not a TV suit for me. Trunks, no trunks, that’s all subjective. For now it seems like Gunn feels the same. One thing is for sure, Gunn will choose the design his artists create which he likes the best, and looks the best on his actor. And us fans will still judge it from those first blurry images we get from a long distance location shot
