Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has opened up about his original plan for Black Panther 2, with Chadwick Boseman starring. The director also says Sony denied him the use of Kraven the Hunter and he even talks Denzel Washington in Black Panther 3.
Coogler appeared on Happy Sad Confused and had quite a bit to say about his Black Panther series. Of course, Coogler had originally envisioned Black Panther 2 starring Chadwick Boseman. Boseman as we know sadly passed away from illness before work could even truly begin on the Black Panther sequel. After the death of Boseman, Coogler had to write a new story, incorporating the character’s death and starring secondary character Shuri.
Given the circumstances I give Wakanda Forever more leeway than I would most MCU films and it’s not half bad. No where near the quality of the first film though and it did miss Boseman. I mean, how could it not?
In the video Coogler explains the original story would have been similar with Talokan invading Wakanda. However, the core of the story would have been T’Challa and his son, bonding during a very important ritual. That ritual, which lasts for 8 days, means he and his son have to stay together for that period and the son can ask any question of the father.

The invasion would have happened just after this ritual had begun and thus we see T’Challa have his son with him in all negotiations and battles, so as to not break a ritual for the first time in history.
It makes for an interesting emotional core at the centre of a similar story. That emotional core was instead I guess replaced by grief over the death of T’Challa.
Other highlights of the video include Coogler explaining how Sony denied him access to using Kraven the Hunter in the first Black Panther film. Remember, this was long before Sony’s plans for their own Kraven the Hunter film. However, as with any deal between Disney and Sony, there’s never any guarantees. Sony does own the characters rights, so you can kinda see where they’re coming from. Even if it sucks for us the consumer. Yet, by not getting Kraven, Coogler instead chose to use Klaue, whom I think worked great in the film.
Finally, Coogler also spoke about how pleased he is to cast Denzel Washington in Black Panther 3. Talking about how it will feel to direct Washington in the film, Coogler replied,
“Out of all the 10 billion people on the planet, however many billion we are, I’m gonna be the happiest one, bro. I’m gonna try to write him a good part.”
What do you think of Coogler’s comments on Wakanda Forever, Black Panther 3, as well as his original plans for Black Panther 2 with Chadwick Boseman? Thoughts below.
