The world may not be ready for the eccentric billionaire Digger Rockwell.

London rolled out the red carpet this week for the world premiere of Digger, the new film from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It’s his first English-language film since The Revenant, and it stars Tom Cruise.

Digger is a US–UK–Mexico co-production, made largely in England. Principal photography ran at Pinewood Studios from November 2024 to late April 2025. The production shot on 35mm VistaVision, a large-format film process rarely used today. Emmanuel Lubezki, Iñárritu’s longtime cinematographer, shot the film, and several cast members are British.

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon who is the most powerful man in the world. He races to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he set off destroys everything. It’s one of Cruise’s biggest departures in years from the action roles that have defined much of his recent career.

The cast includes Riz Ahmed as a scientist named Ganesh, John Goodman as the dictatorial President Compson, Sandra Hüller as Digger’s sister Emma, and Michael Stuhlbarg as the Vice President. Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Sophie Wilde, Pip Torrens, Mercedes Hernández and Danny Kirrane round out the ensemble.

Iñárritu wrote the screenplay with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone, based on a story by Iñárritu and Berman. Dinelaris and Giacobone also co-wrote Birdman, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Stephen Mirrione, who won an Oscar for editing Traffic, edited Digger with Conor O’Neill. The score is the first feature film score by British musician Cosmo Sheldrake.

Warner Bros. Pictures opens Digger in theaters, including IMAX, on October 2, 2026.
