DICE And Bungie In The Running For Star Wars: Battlefront 3 | UPDATE: DICE Seemingly Confirmed

According to the latest gaming Barside Buzz three studios are in the running to develop Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for Lucasfilm Games.

According to the latest gaming Barside Buzz DICE and Bungie are in the running to develop Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for Lucasfilm Games. It was earlier this week we shared an interview with Lucasfilm Games vice-president talking about working with other studios and surprise games.

[UPDATE]

[According to Variety, it seems DICE and Respawn already have the gig and Bungie are out of the race. The trade published this in an article discussing the news that EA owned Bioware were effectively shutting down.

‘In more upbeat news, EA’s Weber and Tinson touted first-person shooter “Battlefield 6” as “a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service.” Going forward, in addition to future “Battlefield” titles, the execs said “we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” While they did not identify the project, multiple sources confirmed that this is “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ for Lucasfilm.’

Original story below, and it seems this rumor was legit, if a little outdated. ]

Original Barside Buzz

Then, industry insider Jeff Grubb came out to say he heard that Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was planned and that DICE who worked on Battlefront 1 and 2 were in the running. The other studio he mentioned, which surprised everyone was Bungie.

Bungie are a surprise because they are no longer an independent studio. Owned by Sony, the studio are allowed to develop games for multi-platform, which we’d assume this would be. However, it would be odd for Sony to make a Multiplat game for an existing IP.

Since then I’ve heard/seen rumors that studio Respawn, who make the Star Wars: Jedi games are involved in some way with the DICE proposal.

Finally, Paul Tassi who has excellent sources within Bungie also said this on social media with regards Battlefront 3.

Four or five weeks ago fans would have assumed Paul was referring to the Destiny 2 team. However, given Bungie just announced that the Destiny franchise will continue and we are even getting cut content back for Destiny 2, I think not. How it will continue we have no idea, but the future of Marathon, which does have a big team working on it still, is less sure. Ergo I think it’s clearly Marathon Paul is referring to here as most of the Destiny people were already switched over or paid off.

Tassi also said he can’t seem to get any information on this one, but that does not mean it’s fake and he thinks it’s legit.

Marathon has been a failure so far and it remains to be seen whether a change of style and genre coming soon will change those numbers. If Marathon does not survive and with Destiny‘s future probably in an incubation stage, you can see why a studio struggling to even still exist currently would be keen for this Star Wars project.

When it comes to opinions on who would be best, I’m biased. It’s Bungie every day of the week for me and frankly the Renegades season of Destiny 2, which used the Star Wars licence, was the best Star Wars gaming I’ve had in a long time. Bungie shooters just feel nice and the lightsaber combat in Destiny is much better than I exprienced in Battlefront or it’s sequel from DICE.

However, if you were Lucasfilm Games, the smartest business choice is probably DICE/Respawn. Both have proven track record with the IP and their games have sold and made money for the licence holder (Disney). Whereas Bungie have just came out of a failure game and lost several studio heads who it seems were far more interested in their own personal wealth towards the end.

I get that; but I also say any Battlefront fan who tried out some of the Renegades campaign in D2 would probably concede that the lightsabers, blasters and AT-ST walkers all felt much better to play. From a purely business pov you choose DICE/Respawn, but if you truly want a game that excites fans to play you choose Bungie. sadly Lucasfilm Games have never been brave and mostly farmed content out to big studios without much care for quality.

What do you think? Do you want Star Wars: Battlefront 3 and if so, which studio do you want to make it? Thoughts below.
