Last week, we reported on a story from the folks over at Movie Pilot. According to the outlet, they had been able to snag copies of the junior novelization of the upcoming Marvel/Sony flick Spider-Man: Homecoming. One mystery that has plagued (yes, definitely a dramatic word) the production for fans: just who in the hell is actress Zendaya playing? Of course, because it’s Spider-Man, many folks speculated that she’d be playing an unconventional interpretation of the redheaded love interest, Mary Jane Watson.
The piece from Movie Pilot seemed to finally debunk this idea (after the cast and crew had repeatedly done so themselves — but who trusts them, right?), stating that Zendaya’s character, Michelle, had the last name Toomes. According to the report, Michelle Toomes would be the daughter of Vulture villain Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton in the film.
This seemed to be a very fitting direction for the film. Spider-Man has always been one of those heroes who was strangely surrounded by villains of his own making, and more often than not, things tended to hit far too close to his personal life. Is it soap operatic? Yes. But that doesn’t stop it from being damn fun.
However, if you were looking forward to that, this may come as a disappointment. According to Tumblr user Spider Holland, who’s had a chance to get a hold of the novelization (and proven with images), this report from Movie Pilot is super false, and Michelle’s name is never revealed as Toomes (via ScreenGeek). In fact, her last name is never revealed at all. So her identity still remains a mystery. We checked the novelization ourselves and can confirm that that Michelle’s name is never stated to be Toomes.
