Anyone out there excited about a Roberto Orci-led big screen reboot of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is about to be really sad. With all of the recent buzz surrounding production ramping up for his directorial debut, which happens to be Star Trek 3, Orci has now said that he can no longer exec-produce a new Power Rangers. Citing a schedule conflict, Orci is no longer attached to the project in any form.
But take heart, Power Ranger fans, because Haim Saban and Lionsgate are still adamant that there’ll be a new film in theaters on July 22, 2016. As we speak, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) are hard at work on the script. The story will once again center on a group of everyday teenagers, who are suddenly chosen by an extra-terrestrial being named Zordon to protect earth from evil, intergalactic forces. He bestows them with great powers, and together they become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Think they’ll look to Pacific Rim for some epic Zords vs Giant Alien battles at the end of the film? Zords, for non-Rangers people, are massive, mechanized metal warriors that are summoned and controlled by the Power Rangers.
Does the news of Orci’s departure sadden you? Or are you still too sad to think that there’ll be another Power Rangers movie at all to be sad about this?
