Sony Pictures wanted to prove that they didn’t give up on Spidey.
At this week’s CinemaCon, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tom Rothman took the opportunity to still claim its stake on the growing $4 billion worldwide franchise.
After partnering with Marvel and allowing them to develop live-action movies with Spider-Man, Rothman announced directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller will helm the Spidey project as an animated film.
The animated film will exist independently from the live-action films. The duo will be writing the treatment and producing the film. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will serve as producers. That film is scheduled far into the future on July 20, 2018.
Lord and Miller found massive success from “The LEGO Movie,†“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,†“21 Jump Street,†and “22 Jump Street.â€
As for the Spider-Man film from the live-action Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU), that Spidey installment will arrive earlier on July 28, 2017. It will be produced by Kevin Feige and Pascal.
As Rothman concluded that this project will be “fucking awesome.â€
