Kevin Feige Wants to do a ‘BLACK WIDOW’ Solo Film

Black Widow

On many fronts, Marvel has been one of the most progressive studios out there. They’ve managed to effectively create the concept of a shared cinematic universe. Sure, the concept had existed out there, but never on the scale that Marvel has created. However, despite this, there is one thing hasn’t done yet a dozen or so films into production: have a standalone female superhero flick.

Yes, we know that CAPTAIN MARVEL is something that’s on the slate, but it is a bit surprising how long female fans have had to wait before seeing one of their own lead her own film. Marvel is more than aware of this, and has taken measures to incorporate more and more strong women into their films, including Scarlet Witch, Agent 13, and of course, Black Widow.

Speaking of Black Widow, let’s talk about Black Widow. She had her humble starts in the MCU in IRON MAN 2, and after THE AVENGERS, had a significant role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which brought her a lot of extra popularity in the mainstream. It’s no secret that actress Scarlett Johansson has absolutely killed it as the character, and rumors of a Black Widow solo movie have been been tossed about the mill for years now, but nothing’s ever materialized.

Now, in a recent interview with Deadline, Marvel head Kevin Feige revealed that they may very well be open to a Black Widow film.

Check the snippet from the interview below!

“We’ve announced the next nine movies, 10 counting CIVIL WAR, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.

We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.”

This is fantastic news. I’ve always felt that not having a film with Black Widow as the lead was a wasted opportunity. The film would star Johansson herself, a woman who’s perhaps one of the most bankable actresses working in Hollywood today. Not only that, Black Widow has proven to be an interesting, layered, and integral character in the MCU, and I’m sure plenty of others would love to see her in her own film.

Granted, we can’t get too excited yet. Marvel still has a long slate of films coming up, and they’ve already made two addition to Phase 3 since the phase was first announced. They’d either have to squeeze the film in somewhere in that slate, adding to an already-full schedule, or slate it for after the AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR films.

Talk is one thing, but I’m waiting for the moment something concrete materializes.
