I think it’s safe to say that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the most anticipated title of the coming season. Sure, countless fans are undoubtedly looking forward to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2,” but even that juggernaut can hardly live up to the hype of the “Star Wars” brand. And that’s not to say that “Star Wars” hasn’t earned it. Disney and director J.J. Abrams have gone to great lengths to make sure that fans enjoy this new release. They’ve pushed the practical effects angle hard, all while banking on nostalgia and bringing in the new.

It’s almost enough positive hype to overshadow the fact that Mark Hamill almost died on set. Yes, you heard me. Turns out Luke Skywalker himself had a bit of an accident while shooting “The Force Awakens” last year, The Sunday Times reports (via The Huffington Post).

While on the west coast of Ireland, Hamill lost his footing climbing up the steps to a monastery and took a fall. He was nearly “a goner,” the report states, but luckily a guide from Irish Office of Public Works was able to catch the 63-year-old star before any damage was done. It wouldn’t have been the first time the island of Skellig Michael had endangered someone. That same year, two tourists’ lives were claimed as a result of the treacherous rocky terrain. It is unclear if Hamill’s accident occurred while on set of the film, or if it just occurred while shooting on location.

According to The Mirror, there were some concerns going into filming. The filmmakers noted that Hamill was “in his 60s and less agile than most.” Fortunately, the result wasn’t fatal.

Either way, this is the second accident to come to light while filming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” If you’ll recall, around the same time last year (just a few weeks prior to the Hamill accident, in fact), Harrison Ford broke his ankle on the Millennium Falcon set. Was the set of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” cursed?

No, probably not. Regardless, we’re happy to report that nothing bad came of these incidents.
