The bigwigs at FOX announced today that there are currently no plans to produce more of their revived shows, Prison Break and 24: Legacy. Prison Break has experienced mediocre ratings on live viewings but has done quite well with delayed viewings.
The CEO and co-chairman of FOX Gary Newman, said that the network, “loved this season†and that if the producers were inclined to have the escape artist brothers, Michael and Linc, break out of more prisons, it would be “seriously considered†by the network.
Prison Break aired on FOX from 2005-2009, and has always been fantastic at building tension, similar in many aspects to the SHOWTIME series Homeland in its intensity. In the show’s final season, the lead Character Michael Scofield, who was dying of a brain tumor, was actually electrocuted. In an Obi-Wan-type moment, Michael sacrificed himself to save the mother of his child, Sara Tancredi, and their son.
When fans first heard the news of the show’s revival back in 2015, and that Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell — who play brothers, Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows — were both set to return, many were wondering how this would be possible if Michael is dead? Well, as one might expect, Hollywood always finds a way. The writers brought Michael Scofield back in a relatively simple way. He faked his own death, but the logic and explanation behind it is done well enough and makes enough sense to be believable and get fans on board for Season 5.
24: Legacy is a spinoff of the groundbreaking FOX show simply titled, 24. The original show was aired on FOX from 2001-2010 and starred Kiefer Sutherland as Special Agent Jack Bauer. The show aired in real time, meaning each episode of the show played out over an hour, for both the viewers and characters. Each season having 24 episodes adds up to one full day in the life of Bauer.
The show returned in 2014 with 24: Live Another Day, which was a 12-episode event and had Kiefer Sutherland reprise his role as Jack Bauer.
24: Legacy, is a traditional spinoff set three years after 24: Live Another Day, and stars Corey Hawkins as x-Army Ranger, Eric Carter. The show adheres to the same real time narration as its predecessors. Debuting after this years Super Bowl, the episode drew in 17 million viewers and adds substantially to the show’s first season average of just over five million viewers per episode.
While we can’t rule out the possibility of these shows returning, it certainly sounds like any return in the next year or two is probably out of the question.
