With just over two weeks left until fans get the first live-action, big screen adaptation of Wonder Woman, a new, and very unusual poster has surfaced from the Chinese market.
The poster, which was shared by DC Comics artist, Nicola Scott, who has been drawing Wonder Woman for DC since 2016, is very much in the style of anime, and displays Diana Prince with her famous sword and shield, along with Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta.
Wonder Woman is the first big hitter of the year for DC, and after the middle of the road reactions to last year’s Batman v Superman, they are in desperate need of a critically acclaimed hit.
While it is possible, and even likely that the films of the DCEU have received more flack than they deserve, they haven’t really wowed anyone either. While Marvel seems to be well aware of what their fans want, DC hasn’t exactly nailed down their own formula. Having launched the Universe in 2013 with Man of Steel, Zach Snyder has always delivered amazing visuals in his films, but has been criticized for storytelling and pacing issues. Now that the Studio has brought in Geoff Johns as sort of their version of Marvel’s Kevin Feige, fans hope this will be the turning point.
This is make or break time for DC. In comes Wonder Woman, hopefully to the rescue, with fans hoping she could hold the key to reviving an extended universe that is struggling to survive.
If Wonder Woman follows suit of previous DC films, and brings in mediocre to subpar reviews, the DCEU will face its darkest hour, with one last chance to save their extended universe coming in November with Justice League.
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, and comes from a screenplay written by Alan Heinberg. Starring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, and Connie Nielson as Queen Hippolyta. Also part of the cast are Robin Wright Penn and David Thewlis.
Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2, 2017.
