Nick Fury is an incredibly important character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — or rather, he was an incredibly important character. Following the closing credits of the original Iron Man back in 2008, we were introduced to the character, and he brought with him the promise of The Avengers, which eventually came to fruition in 2012. However, following his extended role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury’s been almost nowhere to be seen. He had a cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but apart from that, he seems to have all but disappeared.

There have been plenty of rumors of him showing up in one of the upcoming Avengers films, but few details have spawned from that. More recently, there have been talks about him having a fairly substantial role as a young Nick Fury in a ‘90s-set Captain Marvel. Speaking with Yahoo! Movies, Samuel L. Jackson himself shared his annoyance at not having been involved in many of those films recently, as well as his general lack of knowledge of his involvement i upcoming films — including Captain Marvel.
“No. I haven’t signed a contract. haven’t seen a script. I talked to Brie [Larson] the other day, and she didn’t say anything. She’s the only person I know that’s actually in the movie. I’ve been rumored to be in several different Marvel movies that I haven’t shown up in.
“I wasn’t in the ‘superhero argument’ movie [Captain America: Civil War], I’m not in Avengers 3 and 4. They’re shooting them now, and they haven’t called me yet. They wouldn’t let me go to Black Panther-ville, so it’s kinda like how you gonna make a black Marvel movie and not let Nick Fury show up in it?!”
It does seem a bit odd that Fury isn’t at least in one of the upcoming Avengers films, but who knows? Perhaps he’ll get a call for a one to two day shoot down the line. In regards to Black Panther, Marvel Studios has been all about story, and while it’d be great to see Fury show up in the flick, if it doesn’t make sense in the story, it’s likely not the best move to have him in the movie.
What could baffle some is Captain Marvel, especially since Kevin Feige himself announced the character at San Diego Comic-Con this year. If he is set to have a decent-sized role, then why is there no call? Well, it’s important to keep into perspective that the film isn’t set to hit theaters until March of 2019, meaning they likely won’t start shooting for another six to seven months. With that in mind, there’s no wonder he hasn’t had a call yet. That being said, once the script is written, logistics are set in place, we’re sure he’ll get that call.
