The verdict is still out on whether or not the DC Extended Universe will have a long and healthy life, but Warner Bros. is taking some interesting steps that an positively affect their properties, should it not. Last week, it was revealed that director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorsese were in talks to develop an origin story for the Joker.
Unlike any of the DC films that had hit in recent years, the Joker origin film won’t be a part of the DCEU. This will allow the filmmakers not to be restricted by any of the the preexisting canon, and will give them the room to actually tell the story they want to tell. Considering that Warner Bros. had considered themselves a director-focused studio, this is fantastic news, and could lead to more Dark Knight-caliber DC flicks.
But what would the Joker film actually entail? Obviously, it’s still early in the development process, so we weren’t expecting to hear anything incredibly soon. However, while on the Joe Rogan Experience (via Batman-News), MMA fighter/actor Brendan Schaub spilled the beans on interesting nuggets.
Here’s what he had to say:
“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips. It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.”
Given that the initial report stated they planned this being a dark ’80s crime film, we were expecting it to be dark, so that’s no surprise. What is a surprise is the revelation that the Joker would be sporting a permanent smile. The fact that he would get made fun of for it as a kid is also intriguing, since it implies that the Joker will have been bullied, making way for all sorts of potential for torment and angst.
While it is just one detail, I can’t wait to see in action, and really hope that they’re able to follow through with this project. In a world where the DCEU exists, there is very much still room for filmmakers to still original, standalone stories with these characters.
