Happy National Doughnut Day to everyone! Created in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago as a fundraiser and to celebrate those that served doughnuts in World War I, the Doughnut Dollies, the celebration continues decades later throughout the nation.
We do things a little differently here at LRM. We’ve compiled a list of some doughnut scenes in movies, edible or otherwise, for your consumption. Try not to get a sugar rush. Some spoilers below.
Sonic the Hedgehog
At the start of 2019’s Sonic the Hedgehog, our titular hero has been stranded on a world unlike his. One of his only comforts is spying on the denizens of the small town in which he lives, giving the most notable among them nicknames. Enter his human sidekick, Tom (James Marsden), who he’s dubbed “The Donut Lord.” Unironically, a police officer that loves doughnuts.
Power Rangers (2017)
Go, Go, Product Placement! This is, of course, nothing new to movies, but I think we can all agree that 2017’s reboot of the “teenagers with attitude” might have pushed the envelope a little too far. Appearing in, or being mentioned in more than a few scenes in the movie, the plot actually revolves around Rita Repulsa needing to retrieve the Zeo Crystals from Earth, which are buried under, you guessed it, a Krispy Kreme.
Iron Man 2
After getting plastered, soiling himself before a packed house, and having had a fight with his BFF, James “Rhody” Rhodes Tony Stark does what a lot of us do and eats his feelings. The fact that he does it atop the giant doughnut of Randy’s Donuts is neither here nor there.
Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift
There are those among you that thought I couldn’t find a way to bring Fast and Furious into a conversation about food. Bless your hearts. Sean is adrift in Tokyo until he meets the charismatic Han Seoul-Oh, who takes him under his wing and teaches him about life and racing. Unlike his business partner, DK, Han has little interest in winning races. When Sean asks what Han races for, we’re given a demonstration of Han’s driving skills.
Law enforcement determines your guilt or innocence based on whether or not you eat the food interrogators give you. At least, that’s the world according to Anthony Anderson in 2007’s Transformers. That’s why he ate the whole plate. The whole plate! Unfortunately, the ensuing sugar rush prevents him from proving his point when the FBI walks in.
Oh, CSI: KFC, your analogies will never cease to make me chuckle. The star of Rian Johnson’s love letter to Agatha Christie had plenty of colloquialisms to spew to the other characters, but none so impassioned as his speech about doughnuts that encapsulated his frustration about the evidence in the whodunit.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Eggsy is a troubled youth, having had his father taken away from him at a young age. That said, his stepfather’s mates seem like douchebags and deserve to get their car nicked. The stunt work is really good and you’ll definitely enjoy the joy ride as much as Eggsy and his friends.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret of the Ooze II
With the first film in the franchise receiving backlash for being “too dark,” the second film decided to lighten things up a bit significantly, which is how you ended up with an incredibly goofy scene where the Turtles try to convince the Bebop and Rocksteady knock-offs, Tokka and Rahzar, that eating the doughnuts they’d brought to the parlay were on the level.
Another Don Cheadle film, another donut. After leaving his wife in the car to grab an evening snack, Swope’s life changes as he’s put in the middle of a robbery in a Dunkin’ Donuts. With all other parties left dead at the end of the scene, the gruesome shooting leads to a happy ending for Buck and his family.
Wherever he goes, trouble seems to follow and that’s no different for Black Dynamite than when he grabs some food from a local business, Roscoe’s Chili and Donuts. Unfortunately, the business is shot to hell when some henchmen try to hench. Roscoe is down on his luck trying to think of a new restaurant idea when lightning strikes.
And that’s our list! What other doughnut scenes out there do you enjoy, edible or otherwise? Let us know in the comments below.
