Netflix Moving Forward With Remake Of Jimmy Stewart Film Harvey

Netflix is moving forward with plans to remake the classic Jimmy Stewart film, Harvey. The film starred Stewart as a man whose imaginary friend is a six-foot-tall rabbit. Which as you might expect causes some troubles amongst his concerned family and friends. Penning the remake will be David N. Weiss and J. David Stem (the two co-wrote the screenplay for Shrek 2).

This could be a great remake if done correctly. I feel the most crucial aspect to its success would be casting the right person for the lead. That may seem a cliche and obvious thing to say, but I feel the person needs to have an innocence as well as a child-like wonder to pull this off.

Perhaps Netflix will be the studio not afraid to remake classics they can get the rights to. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were at one time involved in a remake, the project never came to fruition, which is a shame because Hanks would have fit well into the role made famous by Stewart.

This film has always come to mind whenever someone has told me how much they love Donnie Darko, I happen to think the Jake Gyllenhaal led film is a dark twisted version of Harvey.

A synopsis for the original film follows below.

“The classic stage hit gets the Hollywood treatment in the story of Elwood P. Dowd who makes friends with a spirit taking the form of a human-sized rabbit named Harvey that only he sees (and a few privileged others on occasion also.) After his sister tries to commit him to a mental institution, a comedy of errors ensues. Elwood and Harvey become the catalysts for a family mending its wounds and for romance blossoming in unexpected places.”
