The history of female team competitive video gamers has its ups and downs. Ubisoft’s all-female team Frag Dolls opened many eyes to their competitive spirit in the mid-2000s. However, League of Legends team Vaevictis was thought to be a publicity stunt and GamerGate in the mid-2010s exposed the male toxicity against female gamers.
In the fictional comedy 1Up, an all-female team looks to compete in the video game tournament to prove they can go toe-to-toe with the entire industry.
The film stars Paris Berelc (Lab Rats: Elite Force, Hubie Halloween), Taylor Zakhar Perez (Minx, The Kissing Booth 2), Hari Nef (Assassination Nation, Transparent), and Nicholas Coombe (Dora and the Lost City of Gold, The Wilds), with Kevin Farley and Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black, xXx: Return of Xander Cage). Kyle Newman (Fanboys, Barely Lethal) directed the movie from the script written by Julia Yorks (Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, Trolls: The Beat Goes On!).

This comedy looks like a funny little film that pokes fun at the growing multi-billion eSport empire and the male toxic culture that’s attached to it. Although there are all-female competitive video game teams out there, individual women successfully competed in the arena with other men or against men. Not to mention, female Twitch gamers are some of the most-watched individuals on the platforms.
1UP is on Prime Video on July 15 from Lionsgate and BuzzFeed Studios.
