DVD Review: ‘The Watch’

If you really love Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn, then sci-fi comedy “The Watch” would be for you. But, only if you really, really love Stiller, Hill and Vaughn.

“The Watch” started off innocently as Evan (Stiller), a manager of a local Costco, enjoy his daily life routines. And then one day, he decided to form a neighborhood watch after one of his employees was brutally murdered. Three volunteers joined the merry group including goofy Bob (Vaughn), bad boy Franklin (Hill) and British pervert Jamarcus (Ayoade).

The movie had a sci-fi twist for this neighborhood watch. Their little Ohio suburb would become a launching pad for an upcoming alien invasion. These aliens were flesh-tearing creatures, who also had a way to blend in society.

The comedy worked well in the beginning as a bunch of men trying to form a neighborhood watch. Once the aliens were introduced, the funny gags were a lot of crude humor involving sexual jokes (basically, a lot of semen and testicles jokes).

The performance of Stiller, Vaughn and Hill were simply playing themselves again from previous comedic films. Stiller played a leader who tried to solve a problem. Vaughn played a guy who always wanted to turn everything into a fun party with alcohol. And Hill—played a jerk, but a tough guy jerk this time.

The film probably would be better off without the alien-taking-over-the-world plot and just simply focus on the neighborhood watch. The final third of the film was simply about these comedic gents somehow battling to stop an alien invasion. They’re simply the neighborhood watch—not The Expendables.

Overall, “The Watch” was watchable for its lowbrow gags in this sci-fi comedy. Don’t expect a lot unless you really love these guys.
