In a brief red carpet chat with Cinefilos, Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro let slip that Warner Bros has huge plans for DC. While many folks have assumed as much, this is one of the first times that someone has flat out discussed the scope of what’s being planned. The revelation came as an answer to a question about the status of “Justice League Dark.” Here’s what he had to say:
“We’re still on it, and writing. And hopefully it will happen. But there’s no developments that are new. It’s still at Warner Bros. They are making plans for the entire DC Universe. All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They’re planning on TV, movies, all the media, so we have to fit within that plan.”
This is amongst the first actual confirmation that WB/DC are planning something on the scale of what Marvel’s been working at for the past few years. The WB has owned DC since 1969, yet has done remarkably little with the brand, so this is very welcome news. One can only imagine what the DC empire would look like if the studio had taken full advantage of owning all of these characters under one banner for the last 40+ years. Either way, this is an exciting time for DC fans.
The first- and most obvious- step in this plan will be 2015’s “Batman vs Superman,” on which most of these plans may hinge.
