With so many studios jockeying for position for everyone’s attention, they look for not only original content but to revive certain classic films and series that will play on the heart strings of nostalgic viewers. Currently as we are right in the middle of Spooky Season, a cult classic film that found a place it hearts of many is Hocus Pocus. What is interesting about this film is that when it was released in theaters back in 1993, it actually lost Walt Disney Pictures millions of dollars. Also it’s release date also puzzles me as it was released in mid-July instead of the fall. It’s no surprise that a sequel was never made, but that is all about to change.
According to Collider, Jen D’Angelo who previously has worked on Workaholics, FOX’s LA to Vegas and CBS’ Happy Together has been brought in to write a script for Hocus Pocus 2, which is being developed for Disney+. According to them the goal is to figure out a way to bring back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy to reprise their roles as Winifred, Sarah and Mary. Currently none of them are attached to the project but the studio is hopeful that they can make it happen. It is also unclear if they are looking for them to be a main character or if they would be involved in order to pass the torch to a new set of witches.
The original Hocus Pocus was directed by Kenny Ortega based off a script by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert that is based off a story by Garris and David Kirschner. The male lead of Max was played by Omri Katz along with Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw and Doug Jones.
True the film is a cult classic that so many people enjoy during this season. But does it need a sequel? Even though people often talk about this film there hasn’t ever really been any call for a sequel. Would a sequel enhance the first film or would it tarnish it’s popularity? We’ll keep you updated as we get more news on the project from Disney+.
