It’s On, It’s Off, It’s On Again – Rian Johnson Talks About His Star Wars Trilogy Again And It’s As Clear As Mud

Rian Johnson, any mention of the director’s name is the equivalent of saying Candyman in the mirror five times right now. In my opinion, and many others, he delivered a pretty bad Star Wars movie which failed to adequately carry on the story of the sequel trilogy, along with many other criticisms, depending on your own personal feelings. Yet, we also have those who love Johnson, loved The Last Jedi and want to see him make more Star Wars movies. Divisive is putting it mildly.

The most recent big story revolving around Johnson was the change in his language when discussing his upcoming Star Wars trilogy, a trilogy that was announced almost immediately as soon as The Last Jedi was complete and yet has gone nowhere. It sounded like Johnson was taking a step back from being definite about his trilogy happening, and with other rumors swirling about Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm after Indy 5, it seemed like it was balanced on a knife’s edge.

Of course, our comments section blew up with that story as it always does when we cover a story about this subject. So, here we go again. Johnson recently spoke with ET Online about his latest movie Knives Out and as you’d imagine they snuck in a little question about Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy asking for any update now that we are two years on from the announcement.

“No, I got no update”

He was then asked about his wording recently where he said he would be “thrilled if it happens,” to which he replied,

“Did I say ‘if’? Oh god, I have no update at all. But I’m still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they’re figuring out when they do what and everything.”

This does make it sound more like it is a case of when it is happening rather than if, whereas his previous comments made it seem the other way round. So, is Rian Johnson going to make a Star Wars trilogy? Honestly, we cannot possibly answer that question at this time, on one hand, we could say there is no reason to really doubt it, but you get the feeling that no one will truly believe it until they announce a release date for the first movie.

Personally, I still have my doubts that this trilogy will ever see the light of day. At the same time, I wouldn’t be that shocked to finally have a schedule for this appear at some point. I think it will be dependent on what happens with Kennedy, if she stays then I see this trilogy happening. However, if the rumors are correct that she will step down within the next few years, then I could see them moving in a different direction.

What do you think of Johnson’s latest comments, do you think his Star Wars trilogy will still happen or not? See you in the usual place below.
