This past weekend saw the wide release of two films in the form of A Quiet Place and Blockers, and the limited release of Chappaquiddick and The Miracle Season.
In at No. 1 in a bit of an unexpected debut is A Quiet Place. This is the horror-thriller directed by John Krasinski. The film was expected to debut in the low-$20 million range, but ended up with a solid $50 million. This means that, with its $17 million budget with a relatively new director, it beat out Steven Spielberg’s $150 million-plus ode to pop culture. Kind of goes to show where the moviegoing audience’s dollars are really going.
At No. 2, we have Ready Player One with $25.1 million. It seems like quite the drop-off when first looking at it (especially compared to A Quiet Place), but it’s only a 40 percent drop — which is quite solid for a blockbuster. It’s made around $391 million worldwide so far, which ain’t bad. When all said and done, I think it’ll need around $450 million in order to break even, so it’s not incredibly far off from that goal.
At No. 3 is the Leslie Mann and John Cena-starring comedy Blockers. It took in a respectable $21.4 million, meaning that it’s pretty much covered its budget. Of course, it’s still not making a profit, as it needs to cover its marketing, but given the overall solid response, it seems like this is a likely prospect.
