A Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Film In The Works

Star Wars fans may have needed a little break after how they received both Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the prequel film Solo. This lead to Lucasfilm and Disney scale back on their ambitious release schedule, but that does not mean they have not been working on titles like this winter’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and TV series set to launch on the Disney+ streaming service, The Mandalorian. But it looks like there is another Star Wars film being developed, but this one is based on a popular video game.

According to BuzzFeedNews a film based on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is currently being written by Laeta Kalogridis for Lucasfilm. She had previously worked on films like Avatar and Shutter Island. They are reporting that she is close to completing the script of what could potentially become a trilogy. Last month at the Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had mentioned that they were developing a Knights of the Old Republic film, but had no further information.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role playing video game that features Jedi vs. the Sith, which takes place about 4,000 years before the events that take place in Star Wars: A New Hope. In this game players join the Republic against an uprising lead by a Sith Lord by the name of Darth Malak. Later you join forces with a Jedi Knight named Bastila Shan a Jedi Knight.

It’s interesting to note that Kalogridis is the first woman to write a Star Wars film since The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. There has been some criticism in the past of Lucasfilm supposedly only hiring white men to write their films. J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will close out the the Skywalker family saga after nine films. The next films will be helmed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, which understandably has a lot of people worried with how they treated the final season of the beloved HBO series.

As for this film being written by Kalogridis, I am very excited to see how they handle a universe so far away from what we have seen on screen. Are you looking forward to a Knights of the Old Republic film? Let us know in the comment section below!

The final film in the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker will be released December 20th, 2019.
