A Survey Attempts To Settle The Die Hard Christmas Debate

With Christmas only a few weeks away, it’s time to once again bring out the question, is Die Hard a Christmas movie? This classic film was released in July of 1988 and stars Bruce Willis as New York City policeman John McClane going up against Hans Gruber played by Alan Rickman. Back in 2016 the British film magazine Empire named Die Hard the best Christmas film ever. Beating out classics like Home Alone, Miracle On 34th Street, and It’s A Wonderful Life.

Of course this title sparked quite the debate which included people who worked on the film. For example, Steven E. de Souza, a screenwriter for Die Hard tweeted last year that the film was indeed a Christmas film. On the other hand, during a Comedy Central roast Bruce Willis said that, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie! It is a goddamn Bruce Willis movie.” So what do most people think?

According to a survey by Morning Consult and The Hollywood Reporter, 62 percent of people say that Die Hard is not a Christmas film. While only 25 percent of people say that it is, with 13 percent with no opinion. The survey was conducted among 2,200 adults in the U.S. in November. Although the numbers show that men were a little more likely to call Die Hard a Christmas film than women, the overall opinion was that it’s not a holiday film.

This survey even got the attention of The CW’s Arrow star Stephen Amell who tweeted “This is absurd”. Personally I side with those who do believe this is a Christmas film, but let’s be honest whatever film you enjoy during these times you get together with your loved ones, in my opinion can be considered a holiday film, regardless of the rest of the worlds opinion.
