According to a new report from Puck, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Bond meeting went well. Rumors have swirled for a while now that Bond producers were looking at ATJ for the new take on 007. Taylor-Johnson is in his early 30’s and British, so he ticks a few boxes and the report says that Barbrara Broccoli wants someone big, but not quite on A list level.
Here is what Puck reporter Matthew Belloni had to say.
“The Aaron Taylor-Johnson rumors are true – he sat with producer Barbara Broccoli, and the meeting went well, per sources.”
“But while Taylor-Johnson fits the bill – great actor, British, fits the younger direction the Broccolis want to go, accomplished but not particularly famous – he’s about to be a much bigger star. If Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Kraven the Hunter or Universal’s Ryan Gosling two-hander The Fall Guy works, Taylor-Johnson might end up, ironically, too famous to take on Bond.”
Well, I would not worry too much about Kraven the Hunter given it’s a Sony movie. Going by previous box office, fans are wise to how feeble the SSMU movies have been and do not at all think they are MCU movies like Sony clearly hoped would happen. Whether ATJ is good in Kraven or not, I don’t see it particularly affecting his Bond chances.

Now, whether Taylor-Johnson is right for Bond, who knows? Many fans did not think Daniel Craig was the right choice and they were wrong. I didn’t love all the Craig movies by any stretch, but that was never on him, he was a damn good James Bond.
Therefore I will cede judgment to Barbara Broccoli and her partners. Bond has always managed to survive anything and come back reinvented for a new audience. I have almost no doubt the same will happen again. If I was to want one thing from the new Bond, it would be this. Be different, I don’t want the Craig Bond films repackaged with a new actor. The Craig movies were unique in that they are a beginning, middle and end for that version of 007. That does not mean we need another origin story, though frankly I would not mind as no other Bond ever got one.
It remains to be seen whether Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the next James Bond? However it’s very clear he is under serious consideration.
What do you think of the story that Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Bond meeting went well? Who would you want to see as the next James Bond?
