The more Zack Snyder goes on and on about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the more I dislike it…and him.
I am not a Batman V Superman hater. The theatrical cut was a mess, yes, but the Ultimate Cut made narrative sense and brought us a badass — though also “murdery” — Batman… but it was still far too long. Though I don’t love the film, I don’t hate it. It has Batman in it, after all!
But, Snyder is trying to convince me otherwise.
As Snyder slowly reveals his intentions behind scenes this past week or so, more obsessive over fans loving him than even Rian Johnson who is constantly explaining Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he’s further proving he doesn’t understand the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman, at all.
Take his latest Vero post:
You remember the scene in question, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) awakes from a nightmare only to pop some painkillers and wash them down with wine. Right next to him is a beautiful sleeping woman, and above is artwork by Robert Mapplethorpe, which represents Bruce using sex as a drug, according to Snyder.

That’s not the Batman I know from the comics! Most the women you meet in the comics, or even in Batman Begins at the hotel or the entire cast of ballerinas in The Dark Knight, are arm-candy, not for Bruce to use as a sex object to momentarily forget his pain, but as part of his “Bruce Wayne” costume. He has to maintain the look of a billionaire playboy, but he is dead inside. His only thrill is donning the cape and cowl and fighting crime! Sex almost never comes into the equation in the comics. Just think of that scene from Batman: Year One when Gordon visits Bruce Wayne because he thinks he may be the new vigilante in town. Bruce has a prostitute and fake champagne, just to throw Gordon off his scent, not to enjoy once Gordon has left.
Of course, this is the more aged Batman closer to what we see in The Dark Knight Returns. This Batman drinks for real, so I guess using sex as a drug is not too far fetched. I mean, he also murders a lot of people… which is quite the deviation from the comic…
What do you think of Snyder’s latest revelation? Does this fit in line with the Batman you know and love? Am I completely off base in my criticism? Let us know in the comment section below!
