The Goonies is not only a classic, it’s a fine representation of the magic that encompasses many film from the 1980s. For years fans have wondered why a sequel was never made. One fan, Adam F. Goldberg who happens to be the creator of another wonderful representation of the 80s the ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs.
Goldberg has been on his own quest of sorts since 2005. His dedication to make a sequel to The Goonies can be compared to Mikey Walsh’s desire to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. And as we all know, Mikey’s persistence eventually paid off. Below you can find a tweet from Goldberg who has an upcoming zoom meeting with Richard Donner, who directed the original film.
Big news! I tried to wait out this damn pandemic to present Richard Donner THE GOONIES 2 in person… but I caved and set a zoom for for Fri. Never say die, people! The brilliant @MBarnardArt created all of my concept art. I don't want to give too much away but COOL! @slashfilm pic.twitter.com/dyo8Fsa3AL

Goldberg’s seeking of a sequel started up again in 2013 while working on an episode of The Goldbergs paying tribute to The Goonies. I for one am optimistic. After the whole Snyder Cut thing, most anything is possible, right?
The film left many viewers searching through their attics on a mission to make the discovery of a lifetime. Even kids like me whose house didn’t have an attic, we still went rummaging through our parent’s storage boxes with the naive, but the hopeful desire of finding that treasure map. I would hope to see in a sequel, the children of Mikey Walsh setting out on their own adventure, that eventually drags Mikey and the rest of the Goonies along for the ride.
