Akira Live-Action Film May Get Removed From Warner Bros.’ Schedule

Hollywood has countless projects that, for one reason or another, refuse to gain any meaningful traction. Of course, we have the forever-in-development Crow remake that has been canceled 87,000 times, and we also have the manga adaptation Akira, which is set to hit theaters on May 21, 2021…at least that WAS the case until a little announcement earlier today.

If you’re just hearing, director Taika Waititi, who just recently put out a call for leads for the movie, signed on to write and direct Thor 4 for Marvel Studios. That report said Akira was being put on hold indefinitely, and TheWrap is corroborating that report, going on to say that the film will likely be removed from Warner Bros.’ slate.

This would not only be a disappointing setback because it’s been in the works for so long, but given how much Waititi seemed to understand the material and the importance of representation in Hollywood, it was especially disappointing — at least to this writer. The plus side of it all is that we’ll be getting another Thor film, but it’s sad that there had to be a sacrifice like this in order to make it happen.

While I’d like to think this would be something Waititi could come back to after Thor 4, the way things are sounding, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
