Why Tim Miller Decided To Direct Terminator: Dark Fate After Striking Gold With Deadpool

Tim Miller may not be new to the VFX game, but he is relatively new to the feature directing game. In spite of his vast experience with his VFX company Blur Studios, Deadpool served as a gangbusters directorial debut for anyone. One would think he’d go off to do Deadpool 2. Instead, he ended up leaving that project due to creative differences, leaving him open for another big project.

That big project was none other than Terminator: Dark Fate, which saw him following directly in the footsteps of James Cameron, taking on a story that directly followed T2: Judgment Day. But what made him decide to take on such a project? Here’s what he said to Cinema Blend.

“I think you’d get the same answer from pretty much any nerd you’d ask, which is these movies, because they were the seminal sci-fi movies of the decade when they came out, they had a big influence on a lot of people, especially at my age. Star Wars and Terminator were the two biggest franchises that made me want to get into this. The idea that I could continue this story is unbelievable to me.”

Of course, there is a lot of inherent risk in a movie like this as well. As beloved as those original two Terminator movies are, all three films (and the TV show) following it have failed to live up to expectations, resulting in a diminishing returns on the franchise. Will he be yet another tally in the “fail” department or can he truly make a similar impact as Cameron?
