Allison Janney is one versatile actress.
For years, Janney performed in many notable funny woman roles in both film and television. In Breaking News in Yuba County, it may prove to be one of the most comedic roles since it’s a dark comedy. Very dark.
Breaking News in Yuba County stars with a majority female cast with Janney, Mila Kunis, Regina Hall, Awkwafina, Wanda Sykes, Juliette Lewis, Ellen Barkin, Samira Wiley, and Bridget Everett. They are joined by Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Keong Sim. Tate Taylor (The Help, The Girl on the Train) directed the film from a script written by Amanda Idoko.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After her husband goes missing, Sue Buttons (Janney), an under-appreciated suburban wife, gets a taste of being a local celebrity as she embarks on a city-wide search in Yuba County to find him. In an effort to prolong her newfound fame, she stumbles into hilarious hijinks as her world turns upside down, dodging a wanna-be mobster (Awkwafina), a relentless local policewoman (Hall), her half-sister (Kunis), a local news reporter desperate for a story, and her husband’s dead-beat brother (Simpson), who all set out to uncover the truth behind the disappearance.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with Allison Janney on the project. We talked about the attraction of being in a dark comedy, the challenges, and crying at the moment.
Allison Janney has a reputation in stage productions and many supporting roles on screen. Early in her career, she was cast in soap operas As the World Turns and Guiding Light. Then she gave memorable performances in films such as Drop Dead Gorgeous, 10 Things I Hate About You, American Beauty, and Nurse Betty to name a few. On stage, she played in a revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge on Broadway that earned her a Tony Award nomination. Also, Janney appeared in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of The Taming of the Shrew. In 1999, she became part of the original cast of the acclaimed television series The West Wing, in which she plays the President’s press secretary. Now, she is the lead in the comedic series Mom. With numerous awards on her shelf, she earned an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in I, Tonya in 2018.
