Get ready, because while Lord of the Rings may have been all the rage back in the early-2000s, it will be coming back in a huge way once Amazon has its way with it. We already know there’s an upcoming prequel series in the works from the studio, but it sounds like their plans will not be restricted to the world of television, as they announced this morning.
The outlet states that Amazon Game Studios will be teaming up with Middle-earth Enterprises and the Chinese video game holding company Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited to create an MMO (massively-multiplayer online) game for PC and consoles based on the fantasy property.
“Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers – from the same studio developing New World – tremendous opportunity to play and create,” Amazon Game Studio vp Christoph Hartmann said in a statement. “We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience.”
Making up the team of developers are veterans who have worked on other huge games like Everquest and World of Warcraft, which is a good sign.
Interestingly enough, this will be a free-to-play game, and I wonder if its main goal is to help build and maintain hype for the property as the series is released. And, of course, like many free-to-play games, I expect plenty of microtransactions in the mix.
No word yet on gameplay style, but going the standard RPG route seems likely, based on the talent involved.
