AMC Theatres To Officer 15-Cent Movie Tickets On First Day — But Will It Drive Traffic?

AMC Theatres 15-cent movies to get butts in seats on opening day.

Like many film fans, I have been struggling over whether or not going to theaters is a good idea. While I don’t value hitting the cinemas nearly as much as many fans, there is undoubtedly an appeal. It’s an opportunity to genuinely escape to a different world. To be free of all distractions as you share a dream with a group of eager attendees. But is it start to do so when the country is still in the midst of a pandemic? Well, like it or not, theaters have to do something, otherwise they risk closure, which few people actually want.

As of this writing, AMC Theatres is set to reopen their doors on August 20. On this day, 100 of their theaters will show a back catalog of movies, including Ghostbusters, Black Panther, Back to the Future, and Grease. This is sort of a big opening-day promotion for the cinema, intended to drive audiences back before the following week, where The New Mutants is poised to actually hit theaters.

But, if that wasn’t enough, on opening day, AMC Theatres is doing something crazy. They are selling tickets for 15 cents apiece. As the chain is selling it, that’s “Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices.” Indeed, that is quite a bargain, and I’m sure there are plenty of cinephiles who would relish seeing a movie like Back to the Future on the big screen.

If you can’t make it on day one, fret not. After that crazy first day, the theater will continue to show those classic movies for five dollars.

And, we can’t forget that, on September 3, the long-awaited Tenet will actually hit theaters as well. Eyes have been on that project for many weeks, as its release was pushed from July, to August, and finally, September. With the pandemic finally easing up overseas, it made sense they would keep the film’s September 3 release date. By this time, AMC expects two-thirds of their theaters to be open.

During this time, they will open with social distancing measures and increased cleaning. I’ll admit that Tenet is a tempting movie, but I’ll likely still be sitting this one out for safety purposes.

What about you? Are AMC Theatres’ 15-cent films and social distancing measures enough to get you back in theaters? Sound off down below!
