American Gods — “Lemon Scented You” Recap

To say Shadow is just a tad bit emotional about seeing his once dead wife, Laura, sitting up on his motel bed and chatting away would be an understatement.

Rather than ponder how it is she is sitting on his bed, Shadow has more important questions, all of which are regarding her infidelity. Laura goes into detail about how long it took for her to cheat, how long it lasted and what her final moments were like. Shadow listens to every detail, as angering as it is. As the conversation rolls on, the two share a kiss that seems to bring a brief moment of warmth (and a heart beat) to Laura. However, all hopes of a reunion are shot down when Shadow tells Laura he is no longer her Puppy.

Then, Mr. Wednesday knocks at the door and within a minute, police cars pull up and the officers arrest Shadow and Wednesday…for bank robbery.

Meanwhile, Technical Boy is forced to meet with Media (Gillian Anderson again putting on one hell of a David Bowie impersonation), who tells him Mr. World has demanded that he apologize to Mr. Wednesday. Though he opposes the idea, he has no choice but to follow orders. At least, that’s what we believe.

While the police are trying to get information out of Shadow and Wednesday at the precinct, Mad Sweeney finally locates Laura and demands his coin back in a very aggressive manner; big mistake. After Laura throws him around and causes some pain, she demands to know how he knows Shadow. Upon telling her that Wednesday is not to be trusted, she still will not give up the coin. As Sweeney makes one last attempt, police race in and arrest him, believing he just killed the woman in the bathtub.

Back at the precinct, Shadow and Wednesday have been placed in the same holding room. Just as they start to talk to each other, a shutter is felt and screams are heard. The door to the room opens and in comes Media, floating into the room in the appearance of Marilyn Monroe. Following her with a dramatic entrance is the one known as Mr. World, the leader of the New Gods. Played by the talented and unorthodox Crispin Glover, Mr. World presents the case of having Mr. Wednesday align with them instead of being against them. He forces Technical Boy to apologize to Shadow and continues to entice Wednesday with the benefits of joining forces. Wednesday wants no part of it, but Mr. World decides to let him think about it, explaining to an angry Technical Boy that Wednesday demands their respect.

In the blink of an eye, they’re gone and Shadow and Wednesday are left with the aftermath: a precinct filled with dead officers. The two leave the precinct unnoticed, as does Mad Sweeney when his arresting officers rush inside the building. From here, we are left wondering what the next steps will be for Shadow, Wednesday, Sweeney and Laura as the appearance of Mr. World has revealed the enormity of the upcoming conflict.
