Based on the Book All Things Possible by Kurt Warner with Michael Silver American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film centers on Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player – but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is. American Underdog is an uplifting story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you have faith, family, and determination.

Review

Overall the film is a feel-good story that almost everyone needs to watch about not giving up on their dreams. The best featurette in my opinion is A Coach’s Faith because it gives us a look into Dick Vermeil’s process of signing Kurt Warner and then having to play him because of an injury to starting quarterback Trent Green.  What is amazing is now their our two films about Dick Vermeil’s unique coaching method with American Underdog and Invincible.

Another great featurette of the film is the audio commentary with Directors Andrew and Jon Erwin, and Producer Kevin Downes.  It seems like audio commentary has become a thing of the past with DVD’s. Listening to Erwin and Downes talk about the movie gives us great insight into adapting the story into a movie.

American Underdog is a great addition to any who collects sports movies.  If you enjoyed the previous films like Invincible or Greater then I highly recommend picking up this DVD for your collection.
