Andor Episode 11 Review – Aliens!

Andor Episode 11 review!

Andor Episode 11 review! This episode was great as I’ve come to expect of Andor, though perhaps not quite at the level of the last two, oh and, Aliens! Andor is not only the best Star Wars under Disney to date, it’s one of the best shows this year. I’ll be staying SPOILER FREE within this review, so have no fear there. With that all out of the way, let’s discuss what I thought about Episode 11 of Andor.

Aliens!

Andor Episode 11 review! This episode was great as I've come to expect of Andor, though not at the level of the last two, oh and, Aliens!

Given that I am avoiding spoilers, all I’ll say is that finally we had some decent non-human (alien) representation in Episode 11 and it was well handled. Does that make much difference to how good the show was, no, but when it comes to feeling like Star Wars, this episode has perhaps the most shared language with other Star Wars shows and films. Does that mean we have suddenly traded all the character work for fart jokes, bad choreography, and silly bad guys? No, thankfully it does not. If you have been following my previous reviews, you know I really, really like Andor. Episode 11 is really as good quality as anything that came before.

I won’t however say that Episode 11 ever quite reaches the heights of the previous two episodes. That being said, it’s not really trying to. Ultimately given the big climax last week, and knowing we have one more episode left, Episode 11 was a bit of a moving day. The pieces are being set up for the finale, and that’s no bad thing. Unlike the majority of Hollywood projects these days, the characters motivations seems more real. In other words characters are heading in specific directions due to the decisions they made, not because ‘we need everyone to be on planet ABC in Episode 60’.

I have some theories on where Episode 11 and the finale may go. However it is not obvious and already laid out before us, and that’s refreshing in a way. There are still so many twists and turns this finale could take. But what about this penultimate episode?

Some great performances this week, Luthen as always, entertains, Cassian on the run, but the real drama is on Coruscant with Mon Mothma and her cousin Vel for me this week. Genevieve O’Reilly continues to impress with her performance as Mon Mothma. There is a great little scene between Saw and Luthen again this week, no spoilers, but I enjoy these two squaring off against one another.

Visually Andor is stunning as always and we got a very nicely shot space action sequence this week. I actually think even the Star Wars fans who don’t like Andor would sit up and take notice this week. Perhaps some fans will think this was the best episode for those reasons? It is the most ‘Star Wars‘ episode yet. However, for me Andor Episode 11, whilst still great, is not quite as great as previous weeks, which is totally to be expected and not a criticism.

Thus far, I have not rated a single episode of Season 1 under an A-. So……. I still won’t because Episode 11 is still better than the vast majority of recent Star Wars and probably has one of the best space action scenes I’ve seen for a while also. As for the Aliens, now I need to see in Season 2 if Gilroy can pull off a more regular character that’s alien and keep the drama at the same level. I think if someone pulls that off, then we will see more of it going forward.

Grade: A-
