Animated The Wheel Of Time Prequel: The White Tower Announced

Well fans of the Wheel, we can now expect an animated The Wheel of Time prequel called The White Tower.

Well fans of the Wheel, we can now expect an animated The Wheel of Time prequel called The White Tower. As per IGN, iwot productions and Squeeze Studios have announced The White Tower, an animated The Wheel of Time prequel movie that will follow a young girl with a special gift who must rise up against an evil that threatens everything she loves.

Although this animated movie is a prequel, it is worth pointing out it is not set in a previous Age. This is still the Third Age of Jordan’s world, but set before the time the books in the main series kick off. We also have an official synopsis.

“The feature will be set in a time before the events chronicled in the popular The Wheel of Time television series from Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. It is an action-adventure about a young girl with a special gift whose life is forever changed when evil visits her remote mountain village. Finding herself alone in a dangerous world, she must go to The White Tower to learn how to use her magical powers in order to save her family and friends. Rebellious and distrusting, she learns that friendship can be as powerful a weapon against evil as any form of magic.”

If you know the series well, you’ll have already guessed this is going into new territory not really explored by creator/author Robert Jordan. Sure, we know a little about some events that happened in the White Tower under previous regimes. We also know how Tower politics work, which I assume will play a major component in the movie. I guess my question is, why?

Is this a made up character and a made up story just using Jordan’s work as a backdrop? We cannot say for sure, but that seems to be the case. With only two Seasons of The Wheel of Time shot and a third in production, I’m not sure we are ready for this yet? Or, perhaps I should reword that to say, I’m not sure there is any interest in that yet. We’ve barely scratched the surface of White Tower politics in the show yet. I get that by the time this movie comes out we will likely be closer to having just had Season 3. However, this still feels more like something you release after Season 8 because the fans are missing The White Tower and want to explore a story from it’s past.

Female Empowerment

“The animation platform has given us the means to expand The Wheel of Time experience by targeting a young adult audience while remaining loyal to the world long cherished by Wheel of Time fans,” said Rick Selvage, CEO of iwot productions. “The White Tower is an action- packed adventure, with a transcendent message of female empowerment that will inspire a new generation of imaginative young women.”

Now before the anti-woke crowd get angry, this is not gonna be for you anyway. The Wheel of Time‘s Third Age is very much dominated by the female half of the population. Very specifically The White Tower, because the only people allowed to be trained in Magic in that Age are women. Any man touching the One Power will go insane and become a ticking time bomb.

In other words, this fits with Jordan’s vision for how that Age was set up politically.

So far there is no release window for The White Tower. However, the story will be written by Thor, X-Men: First Class, and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous‘ Zack Stentz.
