It’s been a while seen we have seen anything from the Paramount/Hasbro film franchise G.I. Joe which is based on the popular classic toy line. We first saw their characters on the big screen in 2009 with the film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Then four years later in 2013 in the sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Before today we only had head of them developing a Snake-Eyes spin off film, but it looks like there is another one in the works as well.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec who wrote for films like the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films as well as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol are writing what is described as an ensemble piece. One character who is rumored to be attached to the project is said to be Chuckles. He is a G.I. Joe character from the 1980’s line of action figures that debuted in 1987 and in the Marvel Comics book that same year in issue #60. His specialty is undercover and infiltration work. He has not previously appeared in any of the Joe films. They are reporting that although he is not said to be the center of the film, the project is in deep development and it’s possible that things could change.
The G.I. Joe film franchise is one of the more successful toy to film adaptations after The Lego Movie and of course Transformers. Paramount is currently in the process of redeveloping the main Joe team as well as working on spin off films that focus on key characters from the franchise. One example of this is the already mentioned Snake Eyes film that finds itself in preproduction with a October 16th, 2020 release.
