Anthony Mackie On How His Captain America Won’t Just Be The Same As Steve Rogers

I am sure based on the fact that it seems everyone in the world has seen Avengers: Endgame you will know that at the end of the movie Captain America (Steve Rogers) goes back in time and then returns as an old man to pass the shield onto Sam Wilson aka Falcon to tell him he is the new Captain America. So how long will it be before we see Sam Wilson (actor Anthony Mackie) donning the suit and wielding that shield?

It could be the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney + show, but there are rumors that will take place before the events of Endgame. Then we have the Russo’s seemingly interested in ‘one more Cap story’, but that could mean something with Steve Rogers? The supposed leaked Marvel slate for Phase 4 we revealed yesterday doesn’t feature a movie we could naturally assume would feature Mackie as Cap, but who knows really?

Actor Anthony Mackie was at Celebrity Fanfest this week and attended a panel alongside Endgame colleague Benedict Wong and Captain Marvel star Lee Pace. Mackie talked a little about how he heard about him becoming the new Cap from Chris Evans himself at his house, but we already had heard that story some time ago. He was though, asked about his version of Captain America going forward and whilst you can catch the video above courtesy of El Rincon de Larelop, here is what Mackie said.

“I love Chris. Chris is an amazing Cap, and I feel like, what he’s been able to do with that character, very few people have been able to do in any cinematic universe or span of films. Because he’s played Cap for A LOT of movies. To take that over, to be a part of that, the legacy of that, is a huge challenge. It’s something where a lot of people are going to expect me to be Chris Evans in the same suit, but a black dude. And that’s definitely not gonna happen.”

There are certain aspects of Rogers we would expect to see duplicated in Sam Wilson, for example, the leadership, the moral high ground, and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done. But the interesting thing is going to be seeing the difficulties Sam has in taking on that mantle and how it affects him and changes him as a person.

I still have one gripe with Sam becoming the new Cap and it’s a fairly big one for me, the lack of any superpowers. Sam Wilson is the same as you and me, his combat skills have never been truly highlighted thus far, always his skill at flying. So how even with that shield, is Sam Wilson going to stand up to supervillains? An easy solution to this for me would have been to have Steve also hand him a vial of Super Soldier Serum he was able to get from the past. This would give Sam superhuman capabilities and immediately erode my concerns about the new Cap going forward. Maybe that can somehow still happen, I don’t know, but I hope it does.

What do you think of Mackie’s comments, and what would you like to see from him as the new Cap going forward? Throw your shield, or shade to the other readers in the usual spot below as always.
