Anthony Mackie Is Hyped About Captain America 4 & TFATWS

Anthony Mackie suits up on the set of Captain America: Brave New World, plus rumors Jordan Peele meets with Marvel about an unnamed project.

If you haven’t seen The Falcon and the Winter Soldier(TFATWS), Anthony Mackie is our new Captain America. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he responded to the news that a Captain America 4 movie is being developed.

I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, ‘Yo, man. Is this real?! [holds up a cellphone] I’m like, ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like, ‘Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.

New Captain America Anthony Mackie

The finale of TFATWS revealed that Sam Wilson, played by Mackie, declared himself to be the new Captain America. I think that we can assume that Mackie will be putting on the newly designed Wakandan flight suit for the Cap 4 movie. Sam picked up the shield and he’s not giving it back this time. He also says he “hasn’t heard anything about season 2” for the series.

It’s always great to go to work with Sebastian [Stan]. And Kari [Skogland], our director, was amazing. It would be fun as hell to do.

The New Captain America

He’s the official Captain America and I’m sure that’s a lot to take in. Mackie said about the finale reveal:

I don’t know what I expected, but it’s definitely not what I thought it would be. I guess I foresaw something that was much more celebratory than just being ‘Anthony with a new Twitter account.’

It’s the same people I’ve been working with on these movies for eight years now, so to go from my first day to now becoming Cap with the same people was really special. Everybody shared in it, from the props team to wardrobe, from the camera department to the people in the office. It was really a collective effort.

Anthony Mackie was prepared for the Cap suit to be leaked through someone’s cellphone or paparazzi. Surprisingly, no one did.

We were in downtown Atlanta, in the middle of Atlantic Station, surrounded by apartment buildings and condos and doing a huge fight sequence and nobody took pictures. It was crazy.

The Different Captain America

We’ve seen John Walker, played by Wyatt Russell, try and fail to take on the role that Steve Rogers left behind, but Sam will be a different Captain America. He’ll be Sam Wilson and Mackie shares how Sam handled Karli, played by Erin Kellyman, and the other Flag-Smashers.

It was more so about him talking them down and trying to communicate with them what they were doing was right, but the way they were doing it was wrong. Remember, he’s a counselor and he’s a regular guy who just happened to become an Avenger. There’s no superpowers, there’s no super-suit, there’s no super-serum. He’s just a guy. I love the idea of him moving through life as Captain America, as someone who brings peace and change instead of destruction and physical force.

In this interesting exchange with EW, Mackie says, it’ll sink in when someone recognizes him in a restaurant and says, “His tab’s on me.” For now, he’s still got “Anthony with a new Twitter account.”
