I’m sure most of our readers have heard of Isaac Asimov, an author with a huge reputation amongst sci-fi in general. Asimov wrote many stories and whilst is work has been referenced a lot, we don’t have that much in terms of direct adaptations, two you might remember were I, Robot and Bicentennial Man.
Though not a huge reader of Asimov’s work, the one series that stands out in my mind is his Foundation saga. Asimov’s Foundation series began as short stories within Astounding Magazine in the 40’s, which he then developed into a trilogy of novels in the 50’s. Many moons later in the 80’s Asimov began working on prequel and sequel stories within the same universe and these also revealed that some of his others words had been set in that same universe.
Now a report by TheWrap says that Apple has ordered an adaption of Foundation to series. Foundation is set to be a 10 part/hour long show under the tutelage of showrunners David S Goyer and Josh Friedman. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross and Robyn Asimov (Isaac’s daughter) will serve as executive producers.
We learned Apple had secured a deal with Skydance studios who had won the rights to the books from the Asimov estate a while ago as you will see in the related section below. But this happens all the time without any shows actually being made, so it’s good to hear this one has made it to the next step.

What is Foundation? Difficult to explain, I tried one of the books and didn’t care for it, but I did read a breakdown of the rest of the plot. It’s high-end sci-fi in my own classification system, which usually ticks my boxes for a story, but this one just didn’t grasp my attention.
The plot (I’ll remain vague) revolves around a Milky Way Galaxy, many thousands of years in the future which is controlled by a galactic wide Human Empire. A scientist called Seldon discovers a way to use math to predict the future and sees a worrying outcome. He predicts this Empire will crumble and that Humanity across the Galaxy will face a 30k year dark age before emerging stronger. However, Seldon also sees a possible way to reduce this dark age period to less than 1k years. He therefore before his death creates 2 Foundations on either side of the Galaxy to preserve and direct humanity towards surviving the eventual collapse and returning far quicker. Initially supported by the Empire, this Foundation starts to fall foul of the Imperial forces along with other organizations and even their rivals/colleagues, the hidden Second Foundation.
How well this story will translate to a scripted TV show I cannot tell you, but I will be keeping an eye on the development of Foundation for sure. In many ways I think Asimov’s work is sometimes dealt with better in others hands, the man was a genius, but I’m not convinced he was that gifted a storyteller, maybe you disagree?
Have you read the books, if so are you excited this is being developed into a series by Apple? Sound off in the comments below as always.
