The scene opens up with a dark and dreary night sky. The moon peeks out from the clouds, and a strange shadow passes in front of it. The camera zooms into an opening in the clouds and we see a hooded figure floating in the air. The figure pulls the hood back to reveal glowing green eyes and then lets loose a blood-curdling shriek. The title card appears… Bewitched.
Coming to the CW…. Gotchya! This remake isn’t headed to the CW, but I bet that’s how they would do it. The show will be coming to ABC though. It was pitched and sold to the network by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) right before he left the network for Netflix.
The original show starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha the witch and Dick York as her normal human husband, Darrin. The series revolved around Darrin’s wish to live a normal life and Samantha getting into shenanigans. He didn’t want her to use magic and he wanted to keep others from knowing about her powers. Samantha’s mother was often at odds with Darrin because she disagreed with hiding Samantha’s abilities. It ran for eight years and was very popular.
The new version will see Samantha as an African-American single mother who marries a Caucasian Darrin. Samantha will be a hard worker and the apparent breadwinner, unlike the original in which she was a housewife, and Darrin is described as being a slacker
I think it’s interesting that Samantha will be bringing an existing child into her relationship with Darrin as the original show made a plot point out of whether or not the couple’s kids would have magical powers. They could still do the same thing here if the child’s father was also a mortal or Darrin can find himself with two powered beings from the get-go.
This isn’t the first time the series has been revived. There was a 2005 movie that starred Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. ABC has been interested in the Bewitched property since at least 2014. There was even an idea of doing a sequel show instead of a full reboot.
