Apple TV+ series Sunny is a mystery thriller that merges East and West. It features a Westernized woman’s journey to uncover her family’s disappearance and a robot. The series is enriched by the talents of Asian actors Judy Ongg and Jun Kunimura, who play pivotal roles in the narrative filled with secrets and twists.
The series Sunny boasts a stellar cast, including Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, Celeste & Jesse Forever) as Suzie, Joanna Sotomura (Barry, The Good Place), annie the clumsy (Ane No Koe, Miss Osaka), Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1,Kate), Hidetoshi Tishijima (Drive My Car, The Wind Rises), Judy Ongg (Love Can Forgive and Forget), Fares Belkheir, and YOU (Nobody Knows, Still Walking).
Here is the official synopsis:
Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta had an insightful conversation with actors Judy Ongg and Jun Kunimura about their roles in the series, the characters they portray, and the unique aspect of the robots in the narrative.
Judy Ongg is a Taiwanese-Japanese singer and actress with a career of over four decades. She made her film debut in 1961 with The Big Wave, based on the Pearl S. Buck novel. She took roles in contemporary dramas and jidaigeki on television, including Edo o Kiru. Her musical credits included over 40 singles and albums and authoring five books.
Jun Kunimura is a Japanese actor who has appeared in Japanese, Hollywood, and Hong Kong films. He won the Best Supporting Actor and the Popular Star Award at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards for the South Korean horror film The Wailing. His other film credits include Tokyo Cowboy, Midway, Shin Godzilla, Kill Bill: Volume 1, and Kill Bill: Volume 2.
Sunny, a ten-episode mystery thriller, premieres globally with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10. It will then premiere one new episode weekly on Apple TV+ through September 4.
