Aquaman: Black Manta Actor On Training And The Film

Aquaman is still a year out from release. Jason Momoa’s portrayal of the character in Justice League seemed to be accepted by most fans. For the upcoming solo film, Aquaman will of course need a villain to fight against, and DC has chosen to go with Aquaman’s arch nemesis, Black Manta. Playing the villain will be actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Abdul-Mateen recently spoke with GQ, and talked about the physical requirements for playing the character:

“Yeah. It’s been about five days a week in the gym and doing fight training, too. I have a love-hate relationship with working out. I do not enjoy the experience when I’m doing it, but I never regret it. I think I’m in the best shape of my life.”

If you are going to be on screen next to Momoa, it’s probably best to bulk up. Abdul-Mateen also commented on the film in general, and while he can’t say much, he sounds very enthusiastic:

“It’s going great. The scale is epic and this movie is going to be so good! I can’t say too much, but in the hands of [director] James Wan and with Jason Momoa at the helm, I think people are going to be really happy with it.”

I think it is a wise choice to start off with the most well-known Aquaman villain. Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta should also play well with the “new” Aquaman that DC has created with Momoa (which is one of the better decisions I think DC has made with their universe).

The character of Black Manta made his debut in 1967. His abilities come from a suit he designed that gives him powers such as enhanced speed and strength and the ability to breathe underwater via artificial gills.
