Aquaman: Geoff Johns Talks About James Wan’s Inspirations For The Movie

Geoff Johns was, for a brief time, the Kevin Feige of the DC Extended Universe, until the flop that was Justice League. Though, considering when Justice League began filming he was not in that post at all, it does seem a little unfair. Especially when the only other DC movie that came around during his tenure was Wonder Woman and that was a critical and financial success.

The big movie from DC this year will be Aquaman in December and Geoff Johns was still in charge when most of this movie was made, and you’d expect Johns to know a little something about Aquaman since he was in charge of bringing the character into the New 52 line of the comics. Recently Johns spoke with Comicbook.com and talked about director of Aquaman James Wan, and his inspirations going into this movie. Here is what Johns told the outlet.

“James Wan, he really picked out, he’s an amazing director and he said, ‘I want to do Aquaman‘. He loves classic Aquaman; the sea horses, the Ocean Master, the orange chain mail. He wanted to do all of that. He was really like, ‘I want to see the iconic Aquaman.’ You can even see there’s blonde in Jason’s hair now.”

And it seems that Black Manta star Abdul-Mateen II was more than happy to have Johns ideas about the movie before they began filming.

“He’s a big fan of the character. Yeah, he’s a big fan of the character, he loves him, and he’s seen some stuff, and he’s liked what he’s seen thus far. I mean, I was really excited to get across the table from him, and talk about the character, and just pick his brain about some of his ideas, and say, ‘Oh, okay, okay. I kind of see what you’re doing. This is where I think I’ll also start.’ We actually sat down, and we were pretty much in line with a lot of the ideas.”

It certainly sounds as though Johns had a real influence on Aquaman and hired a director who understood the character well. If this turns out to be a successful movie I wonder if there will be calls to bring Geoff Johns back in? I doubt it’s even on the table, and it remains to be seen whether all this adds up to a good movie, I guess we will know more come December.
