Aquaman: Jason Momoa Wants To Make A Hero You Can Have A Beer With

There is something really magical about superheroes. Oftentimes, they simultaneously embody the best and worst aspects of us. Though while we can relate on some level to many of them, there aren’t very many superheroes out there that kind of speak to the everyman.

Sure, Superman stands up for the everyman, but he ain’t actually an everyman. Similarly, Bruce Wayne comes from money, and while he knows suffering, he’s not the most approachable. When you have characters like DC, you are left with few who amount to less than living gods. It’s with this in mind that actor Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman, wanted to take a different approach, as he revealed at a roundtable during an Aquaman set visit:

“I think I wanted to make [the guy you can have a beer with]; I think that’s why they kind of hired me to play the role. I mean, he’s serious, but he’s just jaded. He’s just seen so much, and he doesn’t really trust anyone. I think it’s all about building the trust, and that’s the whole Justice League thing — just being the team. You can’t sit down and have a beer with Superman, you know what I mean? You can’t. I wanted Aquaman definitely to be that guy — that he’s blue collar. I mean the whole thing about him, I wanted him blue collar: he’s raised with his dad, worked on bikes, worked on old cars with his father, and at a certain age he’s given this gift. He doesn’t know how to deal with it.”

As I mentioned above, virtually everyone outside of maybe Green Arrow and Bruce Wayne are living gods, so there’s already a bit of a disconnect — and even with those two, it’s not super easy to imagine sitting down and having a drink with them. Prior to Momoa’s casting, I’d argue that Aquaman fell into the same god-like category, but now, I can see where Momoa’s coming from.

But is this the right approach for the character? That’s one big question I’m sure you all would love to debate in the comments below!

Aquaman hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
