Aquaman Will Be Facing His Arch Nemesis In His First Standalone Film!

I think it goes without saying that if there’s a superhero flick that is facing an uphill battle with audiences, it’s AQUAMAN. This is a character that non comic book fans have been making fun of for decades. With the semi-recent NEW 52 run of the superhero, DC did their best to sell him as a badass warrior, but that damage has already long since been done. Aquaman’s credibility still remains rather tainted with mainstream audiences.

No surprise then that DC is pulling out all the stop with this character. According to TheWrap, Aquaman will be facing off against his arch nemesis, Black Manta, for his first outing. Now, as silly as Black Manta may look, I couldn’t see this going any other way for Aquaman’s inaugural film, as I can see it being in keeping with Wan’s darker style. For those unfamiliar with the character, Black Manta is a suited figure who tries to take over Atlantis and claim it for his own people. His plan doesn’t succeed, and he ends up killing Aquaman’s son. This leaves Aquaman bitter and angry, and sends him on a search of vengeance.

Black Manta is the villain responsible for the death of Aquaman's son.

Black Manta is the villain responsible for the death of Aquaman’s son.

It’s also worth noting that Black Manta’s secret identity isn’t a metahuman at all, but rather an autistic black man (hence the “black” in Black Manta) in search of a home for his people. This paints him in a slightly more sympathetic light, but that isn’t necessarily the reason I think he’ll work.

I find it very possible that this first AQUAMAN movie could, in fact, take place after Black Manta tries to take over Atlantis. He fails, and kills Aquaman’s son as a result. Perhaps the film will chronicle Aquaman’s journey to find Black Manta, and bring him to justice once and for all.

Now all DC has to do is try and pull off that ridiculous suit.

What do you think? Is Black Manta the right way to go for this film, or should Aquaman face off against someone else for his first film? Let us know your thoughts down below!

AQUAMAN hits theaters on July 27, 2018.
