Are The New Star Wars Disney+ Shows Leading Towards A Big Event?

If you didn’t catch it, yesterday LRM exclusively revealed some new Star Wars Disney+ shows rumors from our source at Lucasfilm. You can check out our original story in the related section below. However, the general gist of this story was that Lucasfilm are about to double down on the Star Wars Disney+ content coming out.

Specifically, we were told that four live-action shows are planned around Ahsoka Tano, Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn, Boba Fett, and a mystery character. Not only that, but our source described these shows as being connected to each other and to The Mandalorian. Ahsoka Tano for one is highly rumored for The Mandalorian Season 2. So that gives us The Mandalorian along with four other shows connected and set around the same time period. As for the Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan shows, those will instead be more ‘one-off’ affairs, not specifically connected to these shows. Dave Filoni is apparently in charge of all this and will help craft a story across these different shows, which will effectively act as a sequel to his animated shows The Clone Wars, and Rebels.

Our source compared this family of shows to Game of Thrones. Specifically, if Game of Thrones had a show for each house of Westeros, intertwined, but separate. I personally thought of a completely different analogy for how this was described. The MCU, so one of the plus points of the MCU is the ability to lead up to an event, right?

Star Wars Event Movie/Show

new Star Wars Disney+ shows

That’s five Star Wars TV shows, with characters who cross over with one another, all set within the same timeline as The Mandalorian. Kinda feels like a TV universe to me in the way that the MCU created a movie universe? If there are five shows all exploring the same timeline, with crossovers, surely that builds towards some event?

I have no idea where any of these stories will go, too early to tell, but I guarantee you they are leading somewhere. It seems like a waste to have this level of interconnectivity without building up to some big ensemble event show. I say show, but actually, they could instead make some kind of event movie, but a movie made purely for Disney+ instead of theaters. The only Star Wars movie we know anything about in theaters is Taikai Waititi’s movie. Waititi’s movie has no date set, but I am not expecting this for a few years at least. Bob Iger did tell fans that Star Wars’ immediate future was on Disney+, and it’s looking good.

Five shows intertwined and leading up to a big crossover show, or even movie? Sounds like a good idea to me, and all overseen by Dave Filoni having a hand in every project. Not to mention the fact that Disney+ will also have those two standalone Star Wars shows in Obi-Wan and Cassian Andor. Yeah, the future of Star Wars on Disney+ does look bright, if these stories work?

Putting Puzzles Together

So let’s have a look at all the pieces coming together in this Filoni led mini-universe. At the end of Star Wars: Rebels, Ezra Bridger managed to save Ahsoka Tano, and prevent the Rebels from being wiped out. Ezra and Grand Admiral Thrawn were transported to who knows where, along with Thrawn’s fleet? Then, somewhere between Rebels and The Mandalorian Season 1, Moff Gideon ends up in possession of the Dark Saber. The Saber was last in the hands of Bo-Katan, who is rumored to show up in one of these shows. As for Ahsoska, at the end of Rebels (set closer to The Mandalorian Season 1 timeline) we saw her and Sabine head off to look for Ezra.

We also have heard rumors that Boba Fett would appear in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. I can see the connectivity of all these shows to both Rebels, and The Mandalorian. However, exactly how these characters all fit together is unknown. That means it’s tricky to work out where the story is going, for now. However, it seems like too good an opportunity to waste for Lucasfilm. Why not to lead up to some big event show or movie? What is going on with ‘ The Child’, will his real identity and purpose be a running thread throughout all these shows?

Could Boba Fett, Thrawn be setting up against the old Rebels crew and El Mando in some climactic finale? It’s hard to say, all we know from the source related to these shows, we have already published. Anything else in here is pure speculation on my part. As said in the subheading of this section, it’s me trying to put the puzzle together.

Where do you think all this is heading. Do you think the new Star Wars Disney+ shows will be separate stories? Or do you feel like it could build towards a big crossover event like I do? Leave your thoughts below as always.
